X-Ring Sealing Principles The X-ring is commonly used as a seal in hydraulic cylinders. It is a typical lip seal that can provide effective sealing when used on pistons or piston rods. In low-pressure applications, the sealing effect is created by deformation of the lips. Because the contact area is small, friction is relatively low. As pressure increases, elastic deformation, expansion, pressure, and stress increase; the radial compression force of the X-ring automatically increases, and the contact length with the sealing surface increases until the entire axial length of the X-ring contacts the sealing surface, thereby ensuring effective sealing under high-pressure conditions. * No twisting: The O-ring can twist in its groove during reciprocating movement, but the X-ring does not twist because of its special profile. * Low friction and long service life: Compared with an O-ring of the same size, the X-ring has a smaller pressure surface. This reduces not only contact pressure, but also friction and wear, providing excellent product durability. The minimum pressure required for the X-ring can be as low as 5% of its width while still providing an effective seal. * Excellent sealing: X-ring contact is distributed evenly across the entire cross-section, resulting in less leakage than an O-ring.
