Teflon/PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a partially crystalline fluoropolymer with exceptionally high chemical and thermal resistance (-200 to +260C, briefly up to 300C). This thermoplastic material also offers excellent sliding properties, a non-stick surface, and very good insulating properties. However, it has relatively low mechanical strength and a higher specific weight compared with other plastics. To improve its mechanical properties, PTFE can be compounded with fillers such as glass fibers, carbon, or bronze. Due to its structure, this material is formed into semi-finished products by pressing and then machined. Properties include extremely high chemical resistance, very good temperature resistance (-200 to +260C, briefly up to 300C), a very low coefficient of friction (static friction equals sliding friction), extremely low surface tension (practically no materials adhere to PTFE, making it difficult to bond or weld), high thermal expansion, relatively low strength and stiffness, a low dielectric constant, and non-flammability.
