Powder Puff Tree (Calliandra houstoniana) Origin: Tropical and subtropical America. Growing: The seeds can be started indoors year-round. Before sowing, soak the seeds in water overnight. Then sow them thinly on moist seed-starting soil. Ensure consistent moisture and warmth. At a germination temperature of approximately 2025C, germination takes about 1014 days. Location / Light: Choose a bright to sunny location. If the plant is kept outdoors, protect it from intense midday sun. Care: The plant requires well-draining all-purpose potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging. From April to September, fertilize every 3 weeks with fertilizer for container plants. Prune the young plants occasionally to encourage bushy growth. Overwintering: Provide a bright, frost-free location for overwintering. Bright rooms with a temperature of 1015C are ideal. Water only occasionally during this period. Every 23 years, thin the plant by removing older branches. Interesting facts: The powder puff tree is a hardy and long-lived species that also grows well in our climate. It produces oval, pinnate leaves and bright red, spherical flowers up to 10 cm in size. The flowers appear almost year-round, but are most abundant in autumn. The plant gets its distinctive name from the shape of its flowers, which resemble a powder puff or makeup brush. Pruning allows it to be maintained at any size.
