Not only can the length vary; in general, three to four different working lengths are available. There are also different chain systems, including large and small cutter teeth. These differently sized cutter teeth require corresponding drive sprockets, and the nose sprocket at the tip of the guide bar will also differ. Therefore, the safest way to identify the correct chain is to count the drive links. The pitch of the drive links should also be known, such as 3/8" or .325".
