Pussytoes, botanically known as Antennaria dioica, is a perennial, evergreen cushion-forming plant with a low, mat-forming growth habit. It develops dense, flat mats of gray-green, slightly woolly foliage that adds color even in winter. From May to July, pink, catkin-like flower heads appear, giving the plant its common name. The flowers sit just above the foliage mat and remain decorative for several weeks. The plant prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, relatively poor soil. It is particularly well suited to sandy or gravelly soils and, once established, tolerates drought well. Waterlogging should be avoided. Care requirements are minimal: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Pruning after flowering helps keep the mat compact, and the plant tolerates pruning well. It is hardy to approximately -34C and requires no additional winter protection. Pussytoes is suitable as ground cover for rock gardens, gravel beds, green roofs, rooftop gardens, and cemetery plantings. The plants are supplied as well-rooted potted plants.
