This fascinating, delicate design radiates nobility and grace. The original binding contained The Government of the Tongue by Richard Allestree and was created by Queens Binder A, one of the most active bookbinders of the Restoration period. With its balance of open spaces and refined elements such as the magnificent frame and harmoniously arranged small stars, it is a dazzling example of 17th-century English bookbinding. Queens Binder was a designation coined by G. D. Hobson for a small group of English bookbinders during the Golden Age of English bookbinding. They were known for using pointill-style tooling instead of the floral volutes that were far more common at the time. According to modern research, the Queens Binders were actually four bookbinding workshops, and the designation for individual bookbinders such as A may have referred to several craftspeople. The name or names of Bookbinder A are unknown, but at least one of the artists is believed to have been William Nott, an important figure in the book trade who worked as a bookseller, stationer and publisher. The quality of the bindings attributed to A also varies considerably, yet this particular work is undoubtedly an outstanding example. The Government of the Tongue was an important work in its time, and as Provost of Eton College, Allestree could certainly demand the finest quality for its publication. The original binding is now part of the Henry Davis gift collection at the British Library. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to restore it to its original splendor for this Paperblanks design.
