Ornamental Luffa Sponge Gourd is an annual, fast-growing, vigorous climbing plant that can reach approximately 15 m. It develops alternate, long-stemmed, deep-green leaves up to 20 cm wide, with 35 lobes and serrated edges, along with yellow flowers emerging from the leaf axils. Its smooth, cylindrical, hanging fruits can grow up to 60 cm long and are processed into sponges. Luffa originates in Asia and requires a warm climate, particularly tropical conditions. Paraguay has its own variety of sponge that was formerly commonly used in the home. Soak the seeds in room-temperature water for 12 days. Use seed-starting soil and coco coir, either separately or mixed together. Sow 12 cm deep at 2126C. Germination usually takes 23 weeks. The seeds are supplied in a resealable bag so the unused portion can be stored securely. Use is subject to applicable laws and is the responsibility of the end consumer.
