About gauge blocks: Gauge blocks were invented in 1896 by Swedish mechanic Carl Edvard Johansson. They are used as references for calibrating measuring instruments used in machine shops, such as micrometers, sine bars, calipers, and micrometers when used for inspections. The blocks are calibrated precisely at 20C (68F) and should be kept at this temperature during measurement to reduce the effects of thermal expansion. Where possible, wear-resistant blocks made of a harder material such as tungsten carbide should be placed at the ends of the stack to protect the gauge blocks from damage during use.
