This Japanese carp windsock is also known as a Koi Nobori or Koinobori. It makes a colorful outdoor decoration for the home or a marine flag for any boat. The windsock is waterproof and durable, features a wire mouth, and is ready to hang. The Japanese Koinobori symbolizes determination and strong will. The idea of the carp as a symbol of strength and perseverance can be traced back to a Chinese legend stating that a carp can swim against the current of the fast-flowing Yellow River and transform into a dragon. Koinobori are often depicted in Japanese artwork amid waterfalls or powerful river currents. Throughout Japan, Koi Nobori are displayed above the courtyards of family homes from approximately one week before May 5 through one week afterward. On Japanese Children's Day, celebrated each May, these windsocks are flown to celebrate the safety, health, and strength of the boys in each family. Their colorful appearance, especially when seen from a train, is striking as they are displayed across the country. Colorful carp streamers are well-known symbols of Children's Day. Many parents display them in the hope that their children will grow up with courage and wisdom. Koi means carp, and Nobori means something resembling a flag.
