The Tornado resulted from a joint project between Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom to develop a powerful multirole combat aircraft. The primary requirement was to create a modern, state-of-the-art aircraft capable of conducting penetrating strike missions at low altitude. This was achieved through the development of a twin-engine combat aircraft with variable-sweep wings. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) was the first version operated by the British Royal Air Force, where it was designated the GR.1. Ideally suited for strike missions, the Tornado IDS was the first version used by the air forces of all three countries involved in its development: the Italian Aeronautica Militare, the German Luftwaffe, and the British RAF. The Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance) was developed by Italy and Germany and equipped for suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), electronic warfare, and advanced reconnaissance missions. Warning: Not suitable for children under 14 years of age.
