Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable alloy consisting primarily of nickel, chromium, and iron, with niobium, molybdenum, aluminum, and titanium as additional components. The addition of niobium, titanium, and aluminum enables the alloy to be precipitation hardened. In the solution-annealed condition, 2.4668 can be formed and processed well. The material also offers excellent corrosion resistance at high and low temperatures and is not susceptible to pitting or stress-corrosion cracking. It has very good creep strength and high fatigue strength. It is also very weldable and provides good oxidation resistance up to 1,000 C. Inconel 718 is used primarily in aerospace applications, including for engines, gas turbines, and housings. The material is also used in offshore technology and marine engineering systems. Other applications for 2.4668 include the oil and gas industry, nuclear reactors, springs, and high-strength fasteners. Inconel 718 is characterized by good formability and precipitation hardenability, good processing properties in the solution-annealed condition, excellent corrosion resistance at high and low temperatures, resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking, very good creep strength, high fatigue strength, very good weldability, and good oxidation resistance up to 1,000 C.
