O-Ring Sealing Principles O-rings are bidirectional seals with a circular shape and cross-section. They are generally made of an elastomeric material, but can also be made from materials such as PTFE or metal. An O-ring seals by deforming the sealing material during installation and under media pressure, closing the gap between mating components. Higher system pressures can cause deformation into the gap, known as extrusion, which can lead to seal failure. Choosing a harder sealing material or installing backup rings to support the O-ring can help mitigate this issue. FKM (fluorocarbon rubber): Depending on their structure and fluorine content, FKM materials differ in chemical resistance and low-temperature flexibility. FKM is known for nonflammability, low gas permeability, and excellent resistance to ozone, weathering, and aging. The operating temperature range of fluorocarbon rubber is between -20 C and +200 C, with short-term use up to +230 C. Specially formulated FKM can be used at temperatures down to -35 C. FKM is also frequently used with mineral oils and greases at high temperatures. Applications The O-ring is primarily used for static sealing applications: - As a radial static seal, for example for pass-throughs, covers, pipes, and cylinders - As an axial static seal, for example for flanges, plates, and caps O-rings in dynamic applications are recommended only for moderate service conditions. Their use is limited by the speed and pressure against which they must seal: - Low-duty sealing of reciprocating pistons, rods, plungers, and similar components - Slowly pivoting seals for rotating or helical movements on shafts, spindles, rotary pass-throughs, and similar components Wide range of applications: O-rings for water faucets and plumbing.
