Tempered safety glass is thermally hardened, making it considerably more stable than ordinary glass, particularly more resistant to impact and bending loads. It is also less sensitive when hot objects, for example, are placed on a glass tabletop. In the event of breakage, tempered glass crumbles into small glass granules, minimizing the risk of injury. For these reasons, tempered safety glass is used for tabletops and as glass panels for door and window infills. Tempered glass must not be modified after manufacture, for example by drilling or sawing.
