Ptychosperma macarthurii, MacArthur palm: The stems grow in dense clusters or, more rarely, singly, reaching up to 7 m in height while measuring only 7 cm in diameter, giving them a bamboo-like appearance. The leaves are up to 2 m long or more and are compound. There are 2328 leaflets on each side, arranged more or less regularly, with almost parallel margins that taper to a point at the tip. The inflorescences grow up to 60 cm wide. This relatively small species from northern Australia and New Guinea produces numerous offshoots and grows upright. It is an attractive and long-lasting houseplant with reddish-purple coloring on the leaf bases and stems. In the NT, this species is classified as endangered; fires and wild animals were the main threats to its populations in the 1990s.
